Many think that it’s impossible to make money from freelance writing.

In my experience, these are the things they do NOT do.

  • They do not choose a niche early, they do not specialize early. If you want to repair your kitchen tap, you wouldn’t call an electrician, would you? You need to choose one area of specialization, master it, and then charge accordingly for your expertise.

  • They don’t create convincing portfolios. This is a mistake that most new freelance writers make. No one will ‘give you a chance’ if you cannot show that you can write well. You need a SOLID body of work. 2-3 good pieces that at least show that you can write with expertise on a topic.

  • The most important of all is the writing itself. Most new writers suck. Because they don’t understand content marketing and how it makes money for businesses. Once you understand that content writing helps businesses make money, how you write will change.

Will I be able to make money even if I have no experience?

Yes. The only thing you need is constant practice. If you practice long enough, and you copy the work of the greats, you too can become a better writer and make money. However, you’ll make more progress if you had feedback from me or any other experienced writer.

How much can I expect to make as a new freelance writer?

Make I just tell you truth, anywhere from $5-$20 per 1,000 words.

When I first started out, I was making $5/300 words. That was about $15/1,000 words. But I only stayed there for a few months. My next gig paid three times more, about $50/1,000 words.

And it just kept going up. Some people earn up to $1,000/1,000 words. But they have been writing for a long time, or are experts in their niches.

These days, my rates are $120/1,000 words. And I’m a lazy writer. As an average writer, you can expect to make anywhere from $100-$300/1,000 words.

How long will it take for me to start making money?

This is my honest answer: I don’t know. But here’s something I do know: if you do ALL the assignments, create your portfolio pieces, choose your niche, and we go back and forth on the assignments, and you end up getting the confidence you need to write good articles..

I assure you that you’re already in the same category as me and other writers who have been writing for a few years.

All clients want to see is a portfolio. A little confidence will also go a long way. You won’t get confidence unless you’ve ACTUALLY done the thing.

If you do the assignments, you increase your chances of getting hired.

But there’s no work out there. And there’s AI to contend with. Is it still worth it to take the course?

That depends on you my friend. Writing is a skill that translates into many fields. If you decide to do UI/UX, you can write the website copy for your clients. Guess what? You would charge extra for that.

If you decided that you wanted to start your own blog, you can use the skill of writing to make money on your own. If you decided to launch a course in the future, guess what? You can use the skill of writing to crush it.

Because at the end of the day, AI is just a tool. 

In the industrial revolution, machines replaced people in factories. Guess what? They still need(ed) humans to repair the machines, maintain them, and control them.

A hammer cannot replace a skilled carpenter.

I’m not an expert on any subject. Is it still worth it to sign up?

Yes! The skill of writing is what clients are paying for. In SaaS for instance, we actually need to interview clients and condense all the information into articles for their audience.

So if you can do research, and you can write the types of content that clients need, you will ABSOLUTELY be able to find work.

If you spend enough time reading or learning about a subject, you’ll gain mastery in no time. 

You can be any type of writer. A fitness writer, a tech writer, or a food blogger.

My English is not so good.

It can get better. If you put in the work. My writing used to be ugly when I just started as well. 

But it is so much better today. If you have problems with English, and you’re willing to learn, I could give you guidance too.

More importantly, you’ll learn VERY quickly that the best writing isn’t complicated at all. Rather, it’s very simple and easy to read and understand.

I only want to write about certain topics. Will freelance writing still work for me?

That’s one of the beautiful things about freelance writing. You can choose any topic (or niche) that you like and then write in that niche.
